The Italian Spinone (plural Italian Spinoni) is an Italian dog breed. Its original purpose was as a versatile gun dog, which the breed is still a master of today. The Spinone is a loyal, friendly and alert dog with a close lying, wiry coat. It is an ancient breed that can be traced back to approximately 500 BC.
It is often used for hunting, pointing, and retrieving game, but the intelligent and strong Spinone can be used for practically anything ranging from companions to assistance dogs. The name of the breed is pronounced spin-own-ay (singular) and spin-own-ee for plural.
Spinone were first introduced to Australia in 1987 and remain quite a rare breed here. To date there have only been just over 182 registered with the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) since the first dogs were imported. A link to the ANKC for a copy of the Breed Standard can be found on our Link page.
I have the privilege of being one of the few "owned" by Spinone in Australia. Welcome to my website which I hope you will explore and get to know more about this wonderful breed and my own family of these terrific companions.
We are not avid showing enthusiasts, but from time to time you will see us in the show ring as we try and make our dogs visible to the public as they are so rare and it gives us the opportunity to show case our breed; but more likely in the cooler autumn and winter seasons you will find us out in the great outdoors pursuing the wonderful discipline of tracking at which these dogs excel and enjoy so much.
